A few years ago my ‘children’ began to move out and buy their own homes and as a house warming gift I gave them a stylised drawing of their new home. They are both on to their second  home and now have a new portrait as well as a reminder of their first ever home. I began to draw similar gifts for friends and family when they moved, and for others to give as anniversary, birthday or wedding gifts.

I can adapt the style to the home owner and house, some pure graphite and pen and others using water colour or coloured pencils, colouring the house or just the surroundings for a very different look.  I have also added first date and wedding venues to my repertoire, adapting any clocks and adding dates.

I haven’t always remembered to photograph before sending them on their way but I have included those that I have below, although some were just quickly snapped on my phone so apologies for any quality issues!

I have decided to start to properly offer these for sale, I have a booklet in Hall of Frames in Belper, who have framed a few of my ‘home’ drawings absolutely beautifully, a good frame makes such a difference …

A  portrait approx 20 by 16 cm (8 by 6 inches) and would cost £50, to be drawn from your own photographs. I am happy to draw larger or more detailed drawings if you prefer, the price would depend on the size and detail.

exhibitions

I am currently involved in two very different exhibitions.

The first is a wonderful book art exhibition organised by the University of Kent and supported by the Wellcome Trust at The Beaney Gallery, part of Canterbury Museums. Its run has been extended until the end of September and if you are in the area and would like to visit here are the details

It is particularly special for me as it features 15 pieces from the artist Martha Hall on loan from the University of New England. Hall’s books document her experiences with breast cancer and interactions with the medical community from 1998 until her death in 2003. I discovered her work during my first year at Sheffield Hallam University and I think I must have quoted her in every one of my essays and my dissertation. Even across an ocean and never having seen her work she spoke to me, to now have a work of mine in the same room as hers is something I would never have imagined. I loved her work so much I searched out and bought a copy of her catalogue ‘Holding in, Holding on’, the quote below is from the introduction

The process of making books has been a powerful part of my healing…
They are a way to share my emotions with my family…
They are a way to educate others about cancer…
They are a way I can have a voice in the world.
They are about making choices.
They are about living.

My book in the exhibition is from my BA degree show, it was a follow on piece from my live art, it is a simple white book containing a gold point grid, at each intersection is a tiny blue dot reminiscent of the tattoos used to mark out the radiotherapy grid on my body. The book contains 45704 dots, one for each person diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004, the year I was diagnosed. The gold point grid is made from dragging a fine 9ct gold wire across a medium to deposit a line of gold on the paper, it is a pale grey that will darken over time, at the moment it looks a little like ordinary graphite pencil, like life its preciousness is easily overlooked.

I am carrying out half of the conversation – from time to time somebody would carry on another piece of the conversation.

The second exhibition I’m involved in is at Sir Harold Hillier Gardens gallery Southampton until the end of July and is a regional show for the UK Coloured Pencil Society. I am just a beginner with coloured pencils so I’m always surprised when I am accepted, using them is like a little holiday, I use a very rough paper which encourages a much looser style to my graphite work and its very much just about enjoying the moment.

I have spent the last four weeks recuperating from an operation on my foot and with another three weeks to go lying on my sofa reading and watching daytime telly has definitely lost its appeal so the chance to put my brain to work and exercise my drawing ‘muscles’, even lying down, has been wonderful.

The theme for the auction is three and quite quickly I knew I wanted to draw an insect, their three segment bodies seemed to fit with the theme and so many of them are really beautiful. They are often overlooked parts of our everyday lives, a condition that often features in my work.  The Paper Gallery represents a diverse range of artists whose work is based around the medium of paper…

New drawings

I have just completed two new drawings, one of which will be entered into an auction to help celebrate the Manchester art gallery Paper’s 3rd birthday.

I have spent the last four weeks recuperating from an operation on my foot and with another three weeks to go lying on my sofa reading and watching daytime telly has definitely lost its appeal so the chance to put my brain to work and exercise my drawing ‘muscles’, even lying down, has been wonderful.

The theme for the auction is three and quite quickly I knew I wanted to draw an insect, their three segment bodies seemed to fit with the theme and so many of them are really beautiful. They are often overlooked parts of our everyday lives, a condition that often features in my work.  The Paper Gallery represents a diverse range of artists whose work is based around the medium of paper and it wasn’t long before I decided on the European Paper Wasp, I have always loved their nests and, well, their obvious connection to work in the Paper Gallery made them, for me, the perfect choice.

As is often the case with me, the photos of my work come with an apology, this time, having already sent them both off, I only have those taken on my ipad whilst standing on one foot with crutches!

A bit of colour …

Over the last five years most of my work has been created using graphite although odd dashes of colour have made an appearance in some of my drawn fabric. After university is a tough time, no more deadlines, crits, projects, all that free time – it sounds wonderful doesn’t it? but it’s a double edged sword, after twenty years as an accountant and six more of study I kinda like deadlines! A change was needed so I decided to explore colour (whilst staying very firmly with my beloved pencils).

I am very pleased and excited that my first two explorations into colour have been accepted for the  UK Coloured Pencil Society’s 14th Annual Open Exhibition 2015, it is taking place at the Menier Gallery, London between the 6th -16th May 2015. Drawing Conclusions – My Father

All of us own something whose value to you far exceeds its material one, your grandfather’s watch, a childhood toy or holiday souvenir.

Would drawing it change it?

What about that thing you have lost, or desired but never possessed, that belonged to another life, would drawing it change your sense of loss.

To have an effect does something have to be true, original, and authentic?

I am giving my imagination and memory a materiality that can then be perceived my others and myself, and can be reviewed. Constructing an alternative future, and past, that is founded on objects yet in which they are removed to reveal my truth.

The final show for my MA Fine Art opens on the 13th June at 6pm

It continues Monday to Friday, 10am-5pm until the 27th June

Its being held in the S1 Artspace, Sheffield, you will find me on the first floor along with all but one of my fellow students (you can find the other member of our group on the ground floor), it promises to be an exciting and eclectic exhibition.

 S1 will also be home to the Mart final show and part of the BA Fine Art degree show, there will be lots to see including  videos and performances, you are bound to find something to intrigue and fascinate.

One Hundred Women

I am not sure if I am alone in this but so often when an opportunity comes along I see the difficulties rather than the opportunities.

When the opportunity arose a few months ago to take part in the forthcoming Leeds Art Book Fair  I hesitated, what would I make? what could I make? could I make anything!

The weekend its running is awkward, I have a lot of other stuff to do etc etc ………….

Thankfully the opportunity to work with a great group of fellow students/artists under the guidance of an inspirational tutor, supported by Sheffield Hallam proved too much of a lure. Its an opportunity that might not come my way again and I really am grateful to add the experience to my growing list of things I never thought I would do.

It has also allowed me to create a work that I might never have done otherwise and in the process to learn a lot.  Submissions were called for with the themes of “archive and office, stationery and document, marginalia and cataloguing, and accumulations and inventories”. I didn’t want to stray far away from my practice and pretty quickly I began to think about lists of people whose achievements were, generally speaking, passed over.

A question that I remember often being used when I was growing up kept going round in my head

If women are as good as men why aren’t there any great female artists/scientists/explorers/mathematicians etc – you get my drift.

I had sort of just accepted it as a truth. I mean I know now there are many great women leading every possible sphere of endeavour, but in the past they had so much to overcome, they had less rights, less access to education and training. Any achievement would first mean surmounting so many obstacles that it would be understandable if they couldn’t.

I decided to look, setting the parameters that their achievements should be primarily pre twenty first century and that they should not be generally well known by the public ( someone without a specific interest in their area).

I knew I would find some, indeed I already knew of a few, what I wasn’t prepared for was how many I would find, the breadth of subjects that women have always excelled in and how far back into history I was able to go.

I had set myself the task of finding one hundred women but let me say now that for each one I have included I omitted five or more.

What I did find spanning two thousand years were women who were successful, ground breaking, innovative and breathtakingly brave.  Artists, inventors, doctors, scientists, soldiers, spies, explorers, and campaigners. Who lived and fought for their work, who fought and died for their beliefs, or who just perhaps stood up for their beliefs when others wouldn’t at a particular moment in time. Women who were overlooked or who found success but have been forgotten by history or women who perhaps we should just take a moment to remember.

Speaking Out Exhibition

I am delighted that in just a few days I am taking part in Embrace Arts exhibition at The University of Leicester’s art centre.

Although the majority of my practice involves drawing, for this exhibition I have revisited my interest with kintsugi, I have previously worked with blue and white plates for a piece called ‘unbroken’ related to my experiences of breast cancer.

This time I have chosen an assortment of plates that would represent different eras and social classes, I have included ones that would be easily recognisable, to contain something that would connect with the viewer’s own life and  emphasise how domestic violence affects all areas of society.

Plates are often chosen when first setting up home, their design reflects the type of home we hope to create, the image that we wish to present as a couple or family. They are desired, saved for, gifted. They are present in our everyday, our special occasions, our celebrations, our tragedies.

Throwing or smashing plates is often used as an image of domestic arguments. The breaking of pottery can be found in wedding and funeral rituals to symbolise something that cannot be undone. Even attempting repair is to accept imperfection.

The contrast of these plates, that were perhaps once carefully selected and are now cracked and repaired, their joints widened and under tension, seeks to highlight the sometimes stark differences between our hopes and realities.
